Sea Gull Century Stories

4921 Justin Tillery: Listening to the old timer band while relaxing on the dock at the second rest stop made the ride worthwhile.

2366 Kimberly Hitch: Great ride with great friends. We loved the ride.

624 Jeff Krieg: I’ve ridden ten times now. The very best part, every year, is coming back through the tunnel, hearing the students yell, and feeling like you just won the Tour de France. Thank you!

Jeannie Weitzel (proud significant other): My husband is riding his 1st Seagul Century 100. I am so proud of his accomplishments. He recently had a bike accident and received 22 stitches, but he persevered and got back on to finish his training. I am awaiting his victory at the finish line.

1707 Kenneth Simpler: I starts cycling eight years ago and was exposed to an assortment of events for various organizations using this type of fund raising activities to support their programs. My first Sea Gull Century was one of endurance and kicking off my socks, followed by shoes and dipping my feet in the Atlantic Ocean. The ponies at Assateague Island were absolutely precious to observe and the many friends I have been able to make has placed this event in the number one position for my cycling year. 2008.

1112 Claire L. Williams: What a great ride! This is the 20th year I have ridden and the weather couldn’t have been better. (I’ve been told that, of the 68 that rode the first Sea Gull, I am the only rider that has ridden every Sea Gull century consecutively.) I rode with a team from Salisbury University and wore my Air Force Jersey in honor of my son who is being deployed to Iraq in 10 days. This ride is especially meaningful to me because I rode this ride for the first twelve years with my children. My son started Sea Gull Century #1 at age six and my daughter was only one! My son also did his first solo Sea Gull Century at age 10! I broke them in right, didn’t I?

698 Rene Welton: This was my first Century and I only rode 42 miles, which was a huge accomplishment since I am a beginner rider. Great experience! Beautiful scenery, perfect day, and I’m glad I did it!

244 Silvia Williams: Tried to call my party while he was standing in front of me! Had a great time.

3186 Angela Thomas: This was my first time and it was wonderful! Great Ride! Wonderful Support.

1770 Rich Luquette: This is probably the 12th time I’ve completed the ride. We generally camp at Milburn Landing, which makes the first rest stop extra convenient. One year I remember finishing the ride and then riding back to Milburn Landing, making for a ~125 day.

1577 Karri Todd: I shared the riding experience with very good friends, and my father for the very first time. My Dad started riding 8 weeks ago and finished the 100 full speed, and ready to ride again. I couldn’t be prouder of him. And my great friend Georgie Gambrill and I decided in June this would be our big ride for the year. It was an incredible day.

1256 Brenda: I’ve the ride for 8 years. It’s a tradition

4839 Rick Larsen: Enjoying the smell chicken stuff as we passed by several of the farms!!!!!
Honestly, great ride, and I already look forward to doing this next year!

141 Tom Keill: My fondest memory today was at assateague island. There was a horse blocking the riders coming off of the bridge.

5854 Michel M. Morris: This year’s century (2008) was a last minute decision for me-it was a century that I was the least prepared for. But, I made it through with the motivation of a great group of riders and the anticipation of cherry pie a la’ mode!

344 Jim Jung: Sea Gull Century 2008 043.jpg This is probably the 6th time I’ve done the Seagull. It’s the first time without anyone coming with me on this trip. It all started when my sister and I started coming down here for the crabs. Always a day trip until we heard about the Seagull.

I was a bit skeptical about the ride today as I haven’t trained for it at all. It’s not that I really “train” for it but I normally ride throughout the year before the ride. 7 miles into it, my knee started bothering me. It usually starts around mile 15. At the Mills Landing rest stop, I had my tube replaced as I suspected a slow leak. I got back on the road and noticed something different and then I found out what. My left leg extended and I thought I heard a “pop”. Last year, I pulled my left hamstring. At that point, I lowered my seat, walked around a little, put on Ipod on and got back on my bike. Well, here I am. I made it. My knee is ok when I walk. My hamstring seems ok. We’ll see later. And after I get back to the motel and take a shower, it’s all you can eat crabs. See you next you Seagull.

510 Andrew Chronister: Today was a memorable century here at SSU because it marks my 1,000th “Seagull” mile. There has been fair weather, as well as foul weather, but even a bad day on the bike is a good day. It’s a very pleasant ride, and the club does a wonderful job supporting the riders throughout the day. That’s what keep us coming back year after year. Great job SSU!

Almost 65 and averaged over 17 mph …feel great!

6329 Larry Perry: My first time at the Seagull Century. I did the metric century. This was a GREAT ride. Wonderful scenery. Nice and Flat! Cheerleaders at the reststops were great inspiration. The bands at each rest stop were excellent! I’ll be back next year for a ‘real’ 100!

This has been a year of firsts for my husband Jeff. Two years ago, he weighed 410 pounds. This year he completed his 1st marathon in May and 1st century ride today at a healthy 225 lbs. We watched for him as he rounded the last corner before the tunnel – what a huge smile he had on his face to see his family and knowing the finish was right around the corner. We’re VERY proud of him!

It was a perfect day to enjoy the country side around the Delmarva area. Each mile I peddled got me closer to one of the oasis that served delicious pie and ice cream. The best part of the day was reaching the finish line and partaking in the festival at the campus.

1953 Edward C. Taylor: My girlfriend, Linda, and I have done 6 Seagull Centuries and this was, by far, the most memorable. The weather was awesome and I was able to celebrate my first century after turning 65. I hope to be back for many more. Also, Linda finished ahead of me for the first time. I promise to do better next year. Many thanks.

My daughter did her first Seagull in 2002 – and has continued to do them each year. She is also a tri-athlete and 3 time ironman florida finisher. This year her fiancé and me (her mom) joined her for the seagull – it was awesome.

This was my first century,… and it meant all the more that I just found out my dad has been diagnosed with cancer… so this ride was for him!

1768 Debby Luquette: I don’t have any one single memory, but I’ve done this at least 12 times now. I do want to thank the Salisbury University Cycling Club and all their supporters for the great times we’ve had. And camping at Milbourn Landing is really great.

518 Georgie Gambrill: This was my first century, and as nervous as I was from the beginning, I rode with a great group of friends that made it all fun and the worries went away!! It was a great ride, good support and thank you to all who made this possible.

3928 David Leinberger: The father on the red tandem with his teenager on the back. Attached was a one-wheeled “trailer” with his 10 year old. Dad was pulling the family today

6314 Allen Borgerding: Five years ago, I was here with a beat up bike that I hadn’t pedaled for six years and I did the hundred miles.

Charles - #6254: I got struck by lightning as a kid and still rode the 100 mile Century with my bike from 1986 that still has the original tires!

Did the ride for the first time two years ago – in the Nor’ easter & still came back this year to the best century ride I’ve ever had. Awesome.
